“Ghosts” - an installation at Sunneyhill Barn, Rowsham for Bucks Art Weeks 2019.

For this installation I used 100 year old farm labourers’ clothes, which were found left in an old trunk in an out-building of a house near Sunneyhill Barn, Rowsham. The Barn, where this was displayed for Bucks Art Weeks, is a converted Victorian cowshed, where some of the labourers would have worked in or around. “Ghosts” was displayed behind the original manger.

Installing this was very exciting. I wanted to give the impression that the ghosts of workers were revisiting their place of work. Most of the clothes were well-worn, patched and darned and some even had traces of mud on them. I was excited to find two old butcher’s bills inside the top pocket of one of the waistcoats dated 1912.

The owners of these clothes also lent me other items relating to the time - farm tools, lamps and keys.
